Leaders of Clan Henderson

Throughout history, the Hendersons have been led by remarkable individuals who shaped the clan's destiny across the Scottish Highlands, Lowlands, and beyond.

The Chief: Alistair of Fordell

In modern times, Clan Henderson traces lineage through the Chief of the Name and Arms of Henderson, Alistair of Fordell. The Chief serves as the symbolic head of all Hendersons worldwide, providing continuity with the clan's ancient heritage.

Historical Leaders

The Hendersons of Glencoe served as hereditary pipers and bodyguards to the MacDonald Chiefs, a position of immense trust and honour. Their leaders were chosen for martial skill and musical talent.

The Hendersons of Fordell held Fordell Castle from at least the 14th century, playing important roles in Scottish law and politics. The Fordell line produced the Chiefs who carry the clan's heritage forward today.

Alexander Henderson (1583–1646) was perhaps the most influential Henderson in Scottish history — a Presbyterian minister and diplomat who helped draft the National Covenant of 1638 and shaped the course of the Reformation in Scotland.
