Historical Markers & Significant Sites

Across Scotland and beyond, numerous sites bear witness to Henderson history. These places connect modern-day Hendersons with their ancestral heritage.

Fordell Castle, Fife

The ancestral seat of the Hendersons of Fordell. The castle has been associated with the Henderson family since at least the 14th century and is the seat from which the current Chief, Alistair of Fordell, derives his title. The castle and its grounds represent the Lowland branch of the Henderson clan.

Glencoe, Highlands

The dramatic valley of Glencoe is forever associated with the 1692 massacre. The Hendersons lived here as part of the MacDonald community, serving as pipers and bodyguards. A memorial in the glen commemorates those who perished. The Signal Rock, from which the MacDonald chiefs allegedly summoned their people, still stands.

Caithness, Northern Scotland

The far north of Scotland is home to the Caithness branch of the Hendersons, who trace descent from Henry Gunn. This region, with its rugged coastline and ancient stone monuments, shaped a distinct Henderson identity tied to Clan Gunn.
