Scotland: A Brief History

Scotland's history is deeply intertwined with the story of its clans. From the ancient Picts and the arrival of the Scots from Ireland, through the medieval Wars of Independence, the Reformation, and the Jacobite risings, the clans have been central to Scotland's identity.

The clan system evolved from the early medieval period, with chiefs leading extended family groups bound by ties of kinship and loyalty. The Gaelic word clann simply means "children" or "family," reflecting the familial bonds at the heart of the system.

Key events in Scottish history that affected the Henderson clan include the Wars of Independence, the Reformation, the Civil Wars of the 17th century, the Massacre of Glencoe (1692), the Jacobite risings, and the Highland Clearances. Through all of these upheavals, Hendersons maintained their identity and continued to contribute to Scottish and world history.
